"Please Bear with Me" |
by Sunnyone |
This is a true story, and the following events took place on September 19, 2000. It happened in the driveway that is directly connected to my mobile home, and the window I was looking out of at the time. All events are very real! |
Describe it to me, the officer said, as I hung onto the phone... Is it black, or is it brown, and are you there at home alone? I answered, Yes, I am alone...the color is too hard to tell... but when she opened her mouth and growled, my nerves went straight to Hell! You see, I had an encounter with a Grizzly bear last night, and I'm still shaking badly...it was a really horrible fright! I'll tell you all the details, it wasn't bad, and it could have been worse... But I figured I'd write it down, so here it is within my verse... At 8pm, I was listening to the storm and blowing wind... I'd just begun an email to a really wonderful friend... When, out of the blue, I heard something running around my little yard... It's steps were heavy, not like a dog, and I heard it breathing hard... My yard is fenced, I wasn't too worried, until I heard the cries... They were coming from every dog on the block, and it got me to wondering why... With flashlight in hand, I quietly opened the window that looks to my drive... And that is the moment that fate took control, as I could have been eaten alive! Three feet away from my window she stood, just looking so calm and serene... 'Twas the Mother of grizzlies, a beautiful creature, and bigger than I've ever seen... Standing off to his mama's side, was a cute little teddy bear... with golden eyes, a little wet nose, and a cinnamon coating of hair... The mama stood up, as a grizzly will do, if they feel that you are a threat... She opened her mouth, and growled so loud....it's a sound I shall never forget! I said a prayer, and asked forgiveness for anything wrong I have done... I really thought that Death was near, and finally my time had come! That grizzly bear could have knocked out the window, and grabbed me in one easy sweep... I felt a scream coming up through my throat, but I still couldn't utter a peep... This situation called for less panic, and more for using my head... So, I tried what an Indian chief told me once....I opened my mouth and I said: I wish you no harm, you beautiful bear....I know that you're stronger than me... and I thank you for bringing your baby around, for my most humble eyes to see...Now, I will step back, and let you pass....you'll get no resistance this day... You and your baby are free to go....so, please....be on your way! She looked at me, and dropped to all fours, then started to hurry on... She mauled the neighbor's garbage can...(just a snack, as the night was still young)... I called the police, and with shaking voice, I asked them to please drop by... And then I collapsed into my chair, where I finally had a good cry! The police arrived and drove right up to that bear and the garbage can... She didn't stop eating until he let loose with a cherry bomb in his hand! Both mama and baby ran straight for the woods, they didn't get shot...I'm so glad... That's only been done as a last resort....(if bears hang around that's real bad)... So, thank you for 'bearing' with me... This is long, but it's one for my book... I know that bear understood me....for she gave me a knowing look! I will never forget the claws, the growl, and the eyes in that beautiful face... The pictures above look exactly like her... She's at home in Alaska's great space! |
